when patch 1.2 hits this are what will be happening to him (copy and paste)
The C2 Droid Corporation and their competitors, the 2V Droid Corporation, have developed a series of new sensors for their products, the C2-N2 and 2V-R8 that significantly improve the Droids' Crew Skill efficiency and critical success chances. These products may be purchased via the Legacy Repair Astromech unit on the player's ship (once unlocked).
Additionally, the C2-N2 and 2V-R8 Droids have had their personality matrices upgraded with an experimental emotional response chip, allowing them to accept gifts and tokens of appreciation. The Crew Skill performance of these units will increase upon acceptance of these goods.
C2-N2 and 2V-R8 have been reprimanded and now vocalize less frequently on personal starships.
to me this will make him alot better
you get this guy at the end of dromund kass class story time.
Med Watch Need to make sure to have activated to make him heal better
pros
great for a tanking character
only really good at the beginning for sending out companions
can be a great healer when geared out till you get your healer companion
if you have cybertech which you can make him gear and keep him gear which will make him great till the end of the game where you companions can get better gear
cons
cant use a weapon so he boxes them for very little damage
comes with no armor so you have to make or buy them
cant get affection with him which make him terrible crew mission character later in the game when you have full party
early game 15-30
use him for you crew skill missions if you don’t want to use him
geared right makes him great healer till you get you healer character
mid game 30-40
if you still need a healer and don’t have one still good but start to drop off around here
crafting makes him worst now cause your companions should have some affection which put him in that back seat
late to end game 40-50
should have a healer which make him bad to use
all other companions should be head out on the missions before this guy(no affection make him bad)
only use him when your other companions are out on missions if you want to(use at your own risk)
so in short he only really shines at the beginning of the game for a partner if you don’t have cyber tech but if you do have cyber tech then he will be a powerful healer till you can get you healer companion. with him getting no affection because when its max out it on a companion will make them finish the mission faster like 15% and seem to have a higher crit chance(good)
Started at zero affection. Bought all three legacy levels of altruism (30% bonus to affection from gifts) costs 90k credits
Gave him rank 5 blue Cultural artifacts (the Signet Ring of Ancient Tion)
312 x13 (4056 affection)
then they started giving 270
270 x2 (4596 affection total now)
Then gave him rank 5 purple Cultural artifact (Memoir of the Unification War)
649 x3 (6543 affection)
then one at 549 (putting me at 7092 affection)
Sample initial gearup for C2-N2 (2V-R8 would be similar) which I just did on a new toon.
Sensor: AA-6, Coruscant or Taris, $6000
Cores: 2x AA-16, 12 Coruscant comms
Motors: 2x UD-28, 10 Taris comms
Parts: 2x UD-29, Taris, $8300
Generator: GTN $1500
Earpiece: GTN $2222
TOTALS: 12 Coruscant comms + 10 Taris Comms + $18022
At this point (level 18) C2 has higher armor rating and much higher HP than I do, and it's not like I scrimped on myself or companion #1. Plus I still have a balance of $8801. So for all those who say it's not viable or "too hard" to set up your ship droid as a healer there it is!

He also has a hilarious punch move he sometimes does in between healing, though I don't know how effective it is.
It's not clear how he can equip bio implants, being as how he's a droid and all. I only wish there was something I could equip in his left and right hands. Strangely enough, if you bring him into a conversation cutscene he has an impressive looking blaster on his hip. He has no dialog however, and he is completely invisible to NPCs. They will even walk right through him during the scene. It's still funny seeing him there though as you wonder what he is thinking as he is watching what is going on, knowing how he is and all.
It seems that in an effort to reinforce the idea that he's not meant for combat Bioware removed his ability to use weapons. Ironically, this results in him attempting to punch things to death.
There is one advantage that I can see to using him as a healer- it allows you to send all of your "real" companions out on missions while you still have a healer around. This helps because your other companions can gain affection, increasing their mission performance, while C2-N2 is locked at zero affection.
As a healer- yea, he sucks. Drop him for your healing companion when he comes along.
But, speaking as a Sage, I can tell you, he's better than Qyzen before you get Theran. It all comes down to Qyzen's worthless techblades, and the difficulty of uprading them- the first is a quest reward stacked against other choices (That are better...) on Taris. The trouble is that's only a green, and it won't be long before he's unable to hold aggro again.
"Many bantha's died to bring you your shimmersilk purse master."
I wished he said this.
