Jedi Knight reward for this was a pair of premium (green) tanking gloves or a pair of dps gloves or a level 50 item lockbox. The gloves are unremarkable and were inferior to the prototype crafted pair I was using at level 46.

The journey from the planetary shuttle was safe for me at 46 provided I stuck to the roads. The quest objective is located in a Republic zone so all NPCs are friendly.

I had the same rewards as reported above as a Consular Shadow. The rewards aren't really worth going out of your way to go to Illum to get, but the experience is nice. I encountered a few easily-avoided enemies on the road to the objective.
