On my Sorcerer's Fury, equipping this makes the ship's blaster damage 34 damage per bolt, and equipping "Grade 1 Beam Charger" gives 40 damage per bolt. So it's not as bad as just 4 per bolt, but it still seems a downgrade.

This seems like a rather odd item...it increases your blaster damage by 4. Which is much worse than other upgrades you can get at the same level as it.

But it comes from a questline instead of a vendor...anyone have a clue about it? Or do people think its just for flavor?

New Stats, PTS 1.2:
Ship's Toughness by 50
Blasters deliver 60 damage per bolt

(This is an upgrade from my Grade 2 Beam Charger, which is 50 toughness, 45 per bolt. In other words, this is now an upgrade for characters in the mid 20s)

I'm thinking this either used to do something extra during beta and was stripped out but the vendor worth wasnt changed, or it was always intended to just be vendor trash

I think it's just a joke. The alien offers you technology like you have never seen if you take him to your masters. Then you end up getting this hunk of junk.

thought it was weird that this item adds 4 damage, which is less than the cheapest upgrade you can buy when you get your ship. At least it sells for nearly 800 credits... maybe that's its only purpose?

Aliens aren't extinct. To name a few of the more famous ones: Hutt, Twi'lek, Zabrak, Devaronian, Jawa, Duros, and of course Sith Pureblood.
