I i would recomend going to Tatooin and do rounds around the ravine between the republic area and the imperial area i Juneland.

You can find alot of them at "Glarus Valley" on Alderaan Planet.

For some reason, Bioware decided to implement 2 types of artifacts gathered from Archaeology, one found in abundance the other not so much, prehistoric artifact (along with others from higher level) being the later kind. They can be found as a node, but the pattern is messed up: you found them in abundance in zones that are higher than the items you can craft .... for example, on tatooine are quite scarce ... where you could craft appropriate level items (for artifice profession at least). Oh well!

They can be found sometimes from Archaeology missions that gives rich or abundant artifacts, it will return both types of artifacts ... but it depends on luck too much to be a sure method to get them.
