I've got 400 artifice and I cannot buy any purple recipes from trainer, so I assume they are drops / rare schematics.

The only way, CURRENTLY, to get purple crystals is to get Columi Weapons or above (Rakata) and plunder them for their crystals on the Imperial side. Republic Columi weapons and up have LTBLUE crystals instead and I have yet to find a way to get a purple crystal there.
EDIT: This is no longer true after the addition of the Geologist Vendors at both Republic and Imperial fleets, selling both Purple and Cyan crystals to everyone.

Being that their are no discovered schematics for any purple gems, it has to be assumed that these are either going to be found in a existing weapon or a rare drop.
This is in comparison to the Advanced Magenta crystals, which DO have discovered schematics and can be found off world bosses via a BoP drop.
Magenta & Purple are ONLY epic quality gems. Therefore there is no way to R/E to learn these cuts.
@trikso - the only procs you can get from R/E are of the same gem type. For example, you can get a 39 blue color green gem to proc a blue, the blue can proc the epic of the same variation. It will not proc a different color line of gems.

@marwar - just to clarify when you say purple do you mean Artifact quality (name of the item is purple) or the actual color of the crystal?
