@ThyBounterHunter- While it is true that in game the Modified DTB-27 Bolt Pistol's name appears as deep royal blue/purple. However the stats are NOT affected more on a royal blue than on an orange. I took my current orange blaster and swapped the mods into the Modified DTB-27 Bolt Pistol. The stats ended up EXACTLY the same. When the developers came up with orange custom items its my guess this one just got over look in the color change.

"To start with, we’ve introduced a new color and item type: the Custom items. Those are shown with an orange border and are fully moddable. This change is purely cosmetic. What we have done is take all fully moddable Prototype items (blue) and simply changed their icon color. This helps us create a better and more unique identity for fully moddable gear.

Since other games have used orange to signify truly rare and epic gear, let me clarify that orange in Star Wars: The Old Republic has nothing to do with 'epic' gear. (And for those curious, our version of 'epic' is a very deep purple, bordering on a rich blue)."

From the 1.2 Patch Notes:

The modified DTB-27 Bolt Pistol is now displayed as a Custom (orange) weapon. The properties of the item remain unchanged.

Though it's listed as having an augment slot here, the version I received last night on Hoth does not. It's just a pistol with the 4 standard mod slots (crystal, barrel, mod, and enhancement). An augment would make this really awesome, since it seems like augments are complete garbage and no gear that I use actually has slots for them, but oh well. As it is, it's just a standard modable pistol with no mods, and if you bought the blaster with Taris commendations you're probably using better instead of spending mods to get this one ready to use.

Live version does not have an augment slot.

Also the +48 tech power does not make it special. If you fully remove mods from any orange pistol, that pistol would have +48 tech power. It's just you virtually never see a totally un-modded orange weapon to compare.

There are also green moddables. Many companions come with them (Bowdar, Elarna Dorne, etc.) and some vendors sell them. I bought Bowdar a new green sword on Nar Shadaa from the regular weapons vendor. Now he has the Khem Val "arc blade" style as well as his "light stick". Both green quality and fully moddable.

Its not a Legendary. A few builds ago the devs were experimenting with the mod system, and in this particular build certain weapons came with no mods in them and the name was orange for some reason. Most of these items were from class quest rewards, as your first weapon given by your class NPC or the weapon you received when you picked your AC.

It's full open slot gear, so it's perfect for any one who uses pistols, likes how it looks and is willing to put the effort into moding it however they want.

From what I have read, they changed a lot of quest rewards and blue items to the new orange 'Custom' color.

This was to avoid confusion so they can have blue (Prototype) items that are not moddable and the orange (Custom) items that are fully moddable. So the only thing it does is show you at a glance if a weapon is fully moddable (orange), not moddable (white/green/blue) and partially moddable (purple).

During Beta, my Trooper got an orange Blaster Rifle and later on after choosing my Commando AC an orange Assault Cannon from the bag. Initially these were blue items.

Not sure what happened to the supposed 'Legendary' items, but I'm thinking they either got scrapped or have a new color now. ;)

Just got this reward after being told by Blizz to go "Speak to Slam Streever" in the Bounty Hunter quest lines.

It's not orange. It has a +48 Power boost and a non statted Blue Crystal that is Forbidden to Dark I and above.

Since it's from the Bounty Hunter (and Republic equivilant, questionmark?) upon finishing Hoth and recruiting the jawa Blizz, it's a shame you can't get a second one. :(

Thank you very much for posting the link to the developer explanation....my only other thought on the matter is the presence of the Augment slot. I think this along would make it a Legendary...but I could be wrong. I did the same thing and swapped my mods out from an orange blaster that I was using and saw no increase...BUT it's purple and therefore it rocks :)

This blaster dropped for me from a random strong on Belsavis right outside the quest area entrance for 'Breaking Through', but I am pretty sure it is a completely random drop.

Is the weapon a base legendary or is it modified to become legendary? Also, does the classification (uncommon, rare, epic, etc.) raise if you add modifications to weapons?

Im going to say this because itll be a basic truth in a few more weeks or looking back. Been playing swtor these past few days during the pre-lease and it rocks! but to the point fully modification pistols rifles sabers are going to be hot! no trading weapons for the best, just anding new mods to existing mod weapons. thats all of my two cents! love the game and so looking forward to full release and the madness that it will insue ! great job on this game. Havent slept in days! quick shower and a samwich:D

It's legendary by color, but there's no difference between this and any other customizable weapon.

Its color isnt orange, its deep purple. It may be "legendary", but you forget... this ISNT WoW, "legendary" means "lore-important", not someweapon made by developers just to have a bunch of stats.

I submitted a pic below, yes I do have the weapon and yes it is a Deep royal Blue. When you add mods/enhancements etc, they effect the armour, min -max damage, when it comes to orange vs royal blue, the stats are effected greater on a royal blue then orange.
