Diminishing returns?

What are the diminishing returns for accuracy, critical, and surge rating? I have a L50 Shadow infiltrator and I'm using the armor piercing build. I'm new to mmos, and I'm confused on what percentages I should be going for on critical. Right now my critical rating is 30% and my accuracy is 98.8%. I was told that there is a limit on how many times you can crit in a certain period of time. Is this correct? If so, how long is the crit cool down? At what point should I stop with critical stats and start going power to increase my damage? It's so confusing. Can any veteran players elaborate and explain a good and high DPS setup? I know as I get my rakata inplants my stats change dramatically so should I be going with power mod to prepare myself for end game leveling? I'm using high willpower armor, crit mods, and crit/accuracy enhancements right now. Surge is another area I'm confused about.

Speaking generally - I have a level 50 assassin but he's a tank and not my main so I'm not good for specifics on DPS stats - I can say that:

  • There is no crit cooldown
  • Every stat's value depends on every other stat (this is obvious for things like crit and surge but it's also the case very every other stat - get more power and your crits hit harder and so on)
  • Diminishing returns are on all stats except Power/Willpower (as gear levels raise all classes will likely see a shift towards power being strong even it isn't initially)
  • Diminishing Returns are a curve. There's never a cap but the return will steadily reduce to infinity (and beyond).

Hopefully knowledgeable Shadows/Assassins will chip in with some specifics for you.

Thank you for the reply. It seems no one knows and I have posted on multiple forums. Can anyone explain what surge actually does?

Crits default to doing 50% more damage than regular hits. A normal hit for 100 would do 150 if it crits.
Surge increases that 50% extra. got 75% surge and that 100 hit would crit for 175 and so on.

There are no diminshing returns on crit. Period. You either crit or don't. There is a difference between how much damage you do with varying abilities and whether they are are standard or force based attacks, but other than that, you either crit, or don't. What you WILL see dimishing returns on is how much crit rating you recieve. You currently have 30% crit rating. Let's say, just for numbers, that you have enough gear to equal a total of 500 points of crit on your gear. Each point gives you X amount of crit rating. The more crit (stat) that you stack, the less X becomes. In other words, if you added an additional 500 points of crit, you would not have 60% crit. You'd have less since each point of crit stat, past a certain point, is worth less than what came before.

I'm not sure if that clears it up any. I'm not really a math whiz so I can't use hard numbers because I don't know them. I understand the concept but I don't math-theory-craft well. Hopefully this gives you at least the basics, if not the hard numbers you're looking for.

The use of terms there is a little confusing.

Crit Rating is the number from gear.
The amount of Crit Chance (the percentage) granted per point of Crit Rating is what decreases as you gain more Rating.

Percentage increases in Crit from buffs and talents do no contribute to diminishing returns but Crit coming from Crit Rating and Willpower do.
