Item Modifications

Throughout your adventures, you may find items that can be modified. By modifying an item, the player can upgrade the stats of an item and keep that item up-to-date. Items that are modifiable can be identified by having the text CTRL + right-click to modify at the bottom of their tooltip.

Many items are fully upgradeable, meaning that their stats can be fully upgraded. This means that if you find a gear appearance that you really like in the world, you can work to keep its stats up-to-date and relevant throughout most of your adventures. Some items will drop with most of their modification slots empty. Other items come preslotted - the benefits of modding these items will come later, when you decide to upgrade its internal components.

The common mod types, enhancements and mods, can fit in all items. However, 'Armoring' can only upgrade wearable equipment, 'Hilts' can only upgrade lightsabers and melee weapons, and 'Barrels' can only upgrade pistols. These special mods are also responsible for upgrading the core stats of the item (the armor rating of wearable gear, or the damage output of a weapon). Color crystals are another special kind of mod - these rarer modifications can be used to change the color of your lightsaber or blaster bolts.

To modify an item, ctrl+right click the item to be modified (such as an assault cannon), then drag the mod into the appropriate slot (such as a barrel into the barrel slot on the assault cannon).

If you use modificatin station you can save your old mods, instead of destroying them

When you purchase Orange items that are able to be modified, the base stat, damage per second or armor, depend upon the item levels of your modifications. The stats listed in gold are a sum of the the light blue stats on the modifications. So, when you find a piece of orange armor (customized) , you can maintain that look throughout the came by simply modifying it as you grow (they are often without stats when purchased). If you are wearing a piece of orange armor, with mods, you can remove the modifications from it and then place them in the new armor. Also, many purple items have mods in them. It can be cheaper to by one of these and remove the excellent mods to be placed in the armor of your choosing. Many crafting skills learn schematics by reverse engineering these mods. It is sometimes preferable to remove the mods for reverse engineering.

In other words, Modification Stations are use to REMOVE mods. When you remove a mod, there will be charge depending on the value of the mod. It can be very expensive.

As of the 1.1 patch (maybe even before then), it seems mod stations are no longer required to remove mods.

Also, there is a bug (which Bioware claims is WAI) where Troopers cannot get this Codex entry because they do not get the mission that grants it.
