Powertech

A Powertech wears heavy armor like a second skin and never balks at field-testing new technology if it means greater protection and upgraded safeguards. The best in shielding, defensive tactics and high-powered flamethrowers combine to make the Powertech an impenetrable one-man blockade, getting up close and personal to enemies.

All Powertechs learn to use personal shield generators and can opt to acquire the skills of a Firebug, using flamethrower attacks and other abilities that do damage at short range and prevent an enemy from fleeing; apply Shield Tech, using a variety of devices to survive any attack and draw enemy fire; and access Advanced Prototypes including fiery missiles and darts to reduce an enemy's survivability and regenerative capacity.

I hate to be the party pooper but this isn't really a Ranged Tank. At minimum, you have to be within 10m of the target since many of your core Powertech abilities require that range. Due to the spec's reliance on Rocketpunch, you really have to be 4m to be most effective.

Pull is rather useless in PvE tanking as anything worth tanking tends to be immune to control abilities.

Uh, that's because you use it on trash packs / adds during a boss fight, not on the boss itself, for which you have jet charge.
Pull abilities are a great complement to LOS pulls or creating space.

Powertech can be a very fun spec to play solo or as a group. It has three specs you can put your skill points into. Two Dps, and one tank spec, if you are tanking you want to pick Shield tech. It is up close and personal most of the fight. Using your flamethrower as much as possible to cause aggro on multiple enemy's, rocket punch to get some big damage numbers. Have Ion Gas Cylinder up at all times is a good idea. I found Powertech to be a much better tank then the SW (that was the only two classes I played so far), but it always comes down to play style. If you are not having fun with your toon then maybe he/or she does not match your play, the key is how much fun are you having with it.

Nazrakin has the right of it. For some reason people took "tank with ranged weapon" to mean that tanking could be done at ranges like 30 meters. I won't say that such a feat isn't possible, but it'll be against mobs with ranged weapons themselves. Even then, you're going to want to be up in its face to utilize your full repertoire of abilities. Melee mobs won't even give you the choice. They'll run up and hit you.

Powertech is the only one of the three tank specs to have both a Charge and a Pull ability

As a tank, you have to be rather close to your main target to use Rocket Punch and your flame throwing abilities, and then you have a whole bunch of ranged attacks to keep everyone else's attention

Playing a bit of both specs from a DPS perspective both powertech and mercenary are fairly well matched in actual damage output. Mercenary can produce more dps and from further away however powertech is significantly more mobile. As far as utility goes mercenary's offhealing is probably more valued by groups while powertech has many more oh ^&*! buttons for personal survival. As BountyHunta also said firebug is a more ranged option, this should give Powertechs plenty of opportunity in the future to keep things fresh by changing playstyles.

Personally I'll probably play the heal/damage AC as a commando and the tank/damage AC as a bounty hunter. I just think the various abilities fit the flavours of the classes better this way, a flamethrower feels a little more believable than a gun that shoots lightning. It's just a shame that the class' charge ability is a shield tech only skill and incredibly deep into the tree.

Hacks: I went up to level 33 with just +power mods, but with the crit talents for Rocket Punch and Flame Sweep I've started to swap-out for +crit to up my dps. I am noticing an increase, but without a decent dps meter it's hard to quantify anything at this point. I say up to lvl30 stick to +pwr, then with the talents go +crit/surge.

I have played a lvl capped toon of every class in Wow since Vanilla. To see the introduction of ranged-tanking to a MMO is a very welcome sight, and i look forward to the new playstyle/content."I'm not specc'ed!" "You will be,.....you..will ..be" ;)

Yes we hate to rain on your parade but as many people stated even if you could range tank, which you cannot, the targets will close the gaps anyways most of the time since they will melee you anyhow. WoW or any other MMO will give you the same problems. MAYBE one boss or two might have only ranged abilities or be a stationary target and you can grab agro from afar and maybe even hold it but even if the class could hold ranged agro most targets (mobs and bosses) will still melee you closing that gap which is why there is dodging/parrying/deflecting/high armor for tanks.

sorry to burst your bubble...again.

The two DPS PT trees are vastly different from eachother. Advanced Prototype is a MDPS spec, while Pyrotech is a RDPS tree. With Dual spec coming "Soon," a DPS BH will have more flexibility encounter-to-encounter then I've ever seen in an MMO.

Which is better for a shield speced powerteck Criticals or Power?

For a shield speced (tank) PT character dealing more damage is usually the case since they usually get a bonus to crit on abilities and could rather use more damage on those abilities or what not. Surge would be ok too but Power increases ALL damage you deal making it the better choice.

It still generates a lot of threat so even though it might not physically pull him, you are still causing threat.

Cheers

You start getting tanking skills at lvl 15-16, before that it's better to have Mako in healing mode.

If you are being attacked you are going to be in meele range unless it is a boss with only ranged abilities, so your own abilities at range are really a moot point as the enemy will close the distance regardless.

powertech will be the first ranged tank that I have played with ever. I love the class, the concept and everything about him/her.

Dont worry about your gear until you get off of the starter zone, Hutta. When you get to level 10, you will get an off-hand: http://www.torhead.com/item/bL54Hyd , which will be your first of many shields - think like a warrior - a powerful one-handed weapon with a shield.

Ahhh yes if you come here from WoW I would say that this class is a blend of DK and Warrior. It is a ranged tank that deal out fairly high damage particularly in groups and feels wonderful when paired with the Mercenary, so if you and your friend both decide you are wise cracking bounty hunters that show loyalty only to cash and credits you will be quite the pair, perhaps one of the most rateable stories I have played. You can play your story out As Chaos Evil, Neutral or even Good and true Neutral. You look out for you and you alone, and the ones you love... if you love anyone.

This class should be called PYROtech instead. At least it would sound cooler and go with the entire rest of the talent trees.

Like any other specialization, you have to be level 10 before you can get the quest to pick a specialization.

@justry, you're pretty dumb then. A lot of old-timers call Classic wow vanilla because it was, and compared to the trash content currently being put out, Vanilla WoW, best wow.

BH seems to be a pretty fair powehouse, and I'm looking forwards to giving the PT a try as a change of pace from my Sorc Healer.
