Vanguard

Unstoppable and utterly fearless, Vanguards wade into battle wearing advanced heavy armor. They are the first and best line of defense in the Republic military, ignoring personal risk and stepping into the line of fire to divert danger from allies and innocents. Though their tactical role is inherently dangerous, Specialists have an uncanny survivability due to their expert defensive tactics and technology.

All Vanguards learn to use personal shield generators and can opt to acquire the skills of an Assault Specialist, relying on shield power surges and energy blade attacks to do damage at short range and prevent an enemy from fleeing; the skills of a Shield Specialist, further training in advanced armor and defenses in order to absorb damage and protect allies; and Tactics, specializing in explosives and weapons that penetrate a target's armor.

  • Class Role: Tank, Damage

Contrary to many of the comments here, the Vanguard is not a ranged tank, or even a ranged DPS. Many of its core abilities (Stockstrike, Ion Pulse, Energy Blast, and Gut, to name a few) require the player to be within 10 meters or melee range of the target. The Vanguard also gets multiple abilities to close range with enemies, such as Harpoon and Storm.

That being said, the Vanguard does have some decent ranged abilities. Assault specialization can probably do the most damage at range out of all of the trees, but I doubt that long range is optimal.

The best way to describe Vanguard is "a melee class with ranged capabilities," as someone on the forums put it. That may seem silly, given that the class's primary weapon is a rifle, but trust me: killing a Sith Lord by hitting him in the face with a rifle butt is one of the most satisfying things you can do in a video game.

While tanking with this class in Beta, I noticed that I also dished out a fair amount of damage, so leveling up to 20 wasn't a pain at all.

(written in patch 1.1) The 3 talent builds for Vanguard are shield specialist, tactics, and assault specialist.
Shield specialist is of course tank spec and so far seems the best for leveling in my option. (though i have not played much in the other trees) this tree does good damage and keeps you alive very well. i find that i can easily get 9-10 medals in pvp and i have no problems taking on gold elites. but from what i hear all around the trooper is a little over powered as of right now.
the Tactics tree as of now is my least favorite tree because it forces you to become a melee dps. its pretty much the smuggler scoundrel with no stealth and a lot less damage. with the only bonus of survive ability (cause you keep your general defense cool downs) as of now i suggest not going this tree until they either fix it or just redo the entire thing :(
Assault specialist is by far my favorite tree if you spec it right you pretty much do great range dps and don't need stockstrike and ion pulse witch are your main melee abilities. you get the new sticky grenade (assault Plastique) and a dot Incendiary round witch when applied lets you use High impact bolt without them being stunned. so far Trooper vanguard has been a great class for me and i loved leveling and playing in end game with it :)
(problems ive run into with the vanguard)
cant tank last boss in the newest raid Kraga's palace because i'm considered ranged and i get gravity bomb. other then that ive had no real problems with the class and have been loving it :)

Don't forget that Vanguard is a great Damage Dealer as well. Chose Assault Specialist for PVP and PVE and am satisfied greatly :) But on level 50, i think i'll take Tactics for Gut matters :)))

Just to reiterate what Morgandonor has said, The Vanguard has a new component to it that is unique among many MMOs which is the ability to range tank. This will make life easier when rounding up many mobs and could prove more useful than some other tanks. It does still require some action in melee range though.

I'm definitely going to play a Vanguard on launch, but I'm still thinking of a nice build. I'm aiming mostly for PVE questing and some flashpoints but I'd love to kick some sith ass "on-the-road" as well, so I believe that Tactics (8-31-2) is the best choice for this, right? And btw, this would be my leveling build, I guess at lvl 50 I'm gonna respec and go tanking Shield Specialist.

For your information, Vanguard does NOT use big two-handed cannon like you see in ToR trailers. If you want to be like that Trooper Jace Malcom then you need to roll a Commando.

I've specced full shield specialist up to 44 and have had no trouble in pvp or pve. I will admit that I haven't truly tested out either damage spec beyond a few warzones. However, going tank spec in pvp matches I've noticed that my overall damage output over the length of the match doesn't change much either way due to my increased survivability. Even though I play in pvp not truly specced for damage I find myself usually within the top 3 in damage just because of how rare it is that I die if I have a half-decent healer around.

I agree that ranged tanking sounds original and new but i believe most of their threat is close range. They also gain alot of threat through melee "Stock Strike" if im not mistaken.

great class im a shield specialist and im consistingly in the top 5 for pvp. does great amount of damage for being a tank, the storm ability is sweet. even better if u have a decent healer or 2 while pvping

The mobs in most other MMOs prefer melee attacks. In WoW, even some caster mobs come in melee range and whack you with their staff.

However, in Star Wars universe, mobs tend to shoot from range more often than melee. So, a ranged tank that can draw attention of mobs spread out over a big area all shooting the same target seems to be a natural fit for these situations. If you have tanked in other MMOs, you would agree how painful is gathering up ranged mobs when you are meleeing.

Like any other specialization, you have to be level 10 before you can get the quest to pick a specialization.
