About this ship

A rare, best-in-class vessel, the D5-Mantis is an alpha predator in the cold depths of space. Designed to meet the hefty demands of a much larger interdiction vessel, the Mantis has a compact frame and above all-- is built to fight. By employing three retractable weapon foils with independent power supplies, the Mantis is capable of safely utilizing armament intended for larger class vessels, as well as reducing its profile significantly in order to be packed tightly into carrier ships with a surprising number of other Mantis crafts. To mitigate what would otherwise be an extremely cramped interior, the engineers of the D5-Mantis make efficient use of vertical space and minimized bulkheads to provide more open areas and ensure ease of access for maintenance. Due to the prohibitive cost of building a completely independent, long-range picket ship, the Mantis has never seen large-scale production. Spotting one in use is a very rare sight, and a mark of exceptional means.

This is the ship used by the Bounty Hunter.

The D5-Mantis is a reward from finishing the Bounty Hunter CLASS questlines up to and including the final competition to get into the Great Hunt. You're not technically "given" the ship.... you have to steal it... as the quest following the competition.

The class questline i'm reffering to happens on Dromund Kaas and you generally complete it about lv15.

IF you plan on participating in SPACE COMBAT i urge you to buy your GRADE 1 upgrades as soon as they become available (lvs 14-17). The full set would cost you $3,600.
These I bought from Ensing Brukes in the SouthWest corner of the Imperial Fleet (the first place you come to after your origin planet). She is in the same shop with ground mounts (speeder bikes yay!). To equip them press "C" for character screen. The tabs for Character, SHIP, and companion are at the bottom. Grade2 Upgrades are crafted using Cybertech but they require lots of Underworld trading material (which at the moment seem to be very limited in availability).
Grade 1 Beam Charger $600
Grade 1 Beam Generator $600
Grade 1 Energy Shield $650
Grade 1 Missile Magazine $700
Grade 1 Shield Regenerator $650
Grade 1 Ship Armor $500 ( i got this as a reward from the first space combat i did so you could skip this and save yourself the money)

-Space Combat for Dummies-
Objects in space have mass. So it's not like your normal gameplay where you can run right through another person. If you smash into a ship or an asteroid, you take damage. you can use Spacebar to do a "Barrel Roll", helpful to shake off lasers pointed at you, and moving out of the way of asteroids and other starfighters.

Enemies starfighters coming head-on at you have priority over the ones who are flying away. Why? Cause their lasers are pointed AT YOU!
You do not fully control which direction you fly (unrealistic i know) basically you fly in a "channel" and just shoot stuff in sight.

Lasers are UNLIMITED (Left Mouse button Default) so press down on that mouse and hold it down through the whole freaking fight.....

Missles ARE LIMITED (Right mouse button default) so use them on Elite targets (yellow shield), capital ship turbolases, and shield generators. Missiles CAN lock onto Multiple targets! Very helpful on Capital Ships. My missile magazine can shoot up to FOUR missiles at a time right now. To do this, you Press and HOLD the right mouse button and Scroll ACROSS the targets you want, then release the mouse button.

Fleet Commendations are given for successful missions, you can buy stuff, like a full pilots uniform (takes a LOT) from a vendor behind the starship upgrades guy on the Imperial Fleet.

IMO, not the most exciting class ship. However, as a fan of the Bounty Hunter style, I can't really complain. I've got my holding cells for captives, and junk to do my necessities.

If you're looking for style in your ship, you won't find it in the Mantis. However as a Bounty Hunter, it's got all you need to secure your hunts.

It looks like a flying Milk Carton... but I have to admit it's grown on me.

Getting your ship is based on story (class quest) completion. To get your ship faster (level 15ish) you need to do only class quests. I got mine in my 20's because I did every quest I could find and that naturally leveled me.

Best thing about this ship - everytime you watch it leave the docks, it looks like its flipping the planet the bird.

Anyone know when you get access to your ship? Is it level-based, or based on story completion?
