Base damage formula: 130.35 + 79% Force Bonus (per tick at 50) = 521.4 + 316% Force Bonus (total at 50)

Note that this ability ticks 4 times, once on application, and once per second thereafter.

Additional notes:
- Force Lightning does not benefit from the Madness talents Parasitism, Deathmark, or Creeping Death.
- Over a full Force Lightning channel, the Madness talent Wrath has a combined 74% chance to proc.
- With the Madness talent Sith Efficacy, Force Lightning has an effective cost of only 6 Force, making it by far the most efficient damage-per-force spell in an SI's arsenal. Since you regen an additional 24 force over the channel due to base regen, this makes Force Lightning resource-positive (you will end the channel with more resources than you began), making it impossible to run out of force just by spamming Force Lightning.
- Force Lightning, baseline, has a damage-per-cast-time roughly 20% higher than Lightning Strike, meaning both dps trees use it.
- Currently it is possible to "double-dip" on procs from the Lightning talent Lightning Barrage. If you cast a Force Lightning to use the proc, then queue another Force Lightning to cast before the first finishes (by default this window is the last 0.5 seconds of the cast), both casts will gain the reduced cast time benefit.

This spell is used to great effect in concert with Overload.

Overload knocks back a rather tough enemy and then Force Lighting to get the most out of the ability without any pushback.

Will FL crits trigger Parasitism?

By jharv1212 at 2011-12-10 18:36:49
I think FL will trigger parasitism because it is doing damage over time to its target.

No to both. It does do damage over time, however it is counted as separate applications of damage several different times (channel effect) and does not benefit from damage over time factors.

FL is exactly like the WoW SPriest's Mind Flay in how it works, and if you weren't reapplying a DoT it was safe to say you were Flaying. Flay was considered a DoT, so it's fair to assume this will be seen as such also... it definitely does so.

It definitely does not.
BTW this is not wow stop comparing it to wow. This is SWTOR and it does NOT work exactly like mind flay. It does NOT count as a DoT for the purpose of SWTOR purposes and does not gain benefits that modify DoTs.

Also, I saw FL proccing Parasitism in a video

Link this so called video that makes false claims it works like a DoT.

This comment is pretty ambiguous as "rank1" doesn't really mean anything to most people. Even in a Madness build, this is not going to be your highest damage per cast time spell, but rather will be an important filler spell that you will cast often when your DoTs are rolling and any other higher DPCT abilities are on cooldown.

This is the signature spell of Sith's lore. First depute in Return of the Jedi, Force Lightning has always been the iconic ability of a Sith to electrocute his victims with the raw energy of the Force.

@Shockrah-- it was in a beta video I had seen, every tick of FL was causing healing, so yes, at one point it was doing exactly as I posted, and my posting was before release, if you'll notice. It's fine if I was wrong later on, which I admit it was so, but at one point I wasn't, and even without that, in every other sense FL is the very same as Flay. It is a channeled DoT whether the game views it as such for DoT effects or not, it causes a slowing effect, and if talented for as a Sorcerer it can be used repeatedly with no cooldown. The only other difference is that it doesn't have anything occur whether Affliction is up or not, and Affliction should stay up if you're Madness spec and not spamming AoE anyway, because if you WERE spamming AoE you'd not be using FL either. And I'll stop comparing it to WoW when SWTOR stops copying so many things from it, thank you very much. Lightsabers and blasters we may have, mate, but when so many things function exactly the same, you call it what it is. Not that I don't prefer SWTOR, mind you. Panda land can burn with a fire that can only be quenched from the tears of so many lost subs.

Regarding healing on FL ticks and Parasitism, there is an Assassin talent called Harnessed Darkness which causes each tick of FL heal you.

Do not spam this ability as it will cause it to stop! Press it once only and wait for it to finish.

How long is this spell channeled over?

By Mikeyboii64 at 2011-11-23 00:33:22
This spell is Rank 5 in the Sith Inquisitor's priority list for there rotation. Usually used once the Talent Tree Proc Lightning Barrage has proced.

Don't discount the fact that if you take enough in the Madness tree for this ability, it becomes a no-cooldown ability that also gives back Force power with every tick or with the right talenting will heal an Assassin tank. Very powerful ability with a lot of diverse talenting going into it.
