Introduced in Patch 1.3, Adaptive Armor Proficiency is given to all players of all classes at level 1. This includes any non-droid companions. Wearing adaptive armor will always 'adapt' to the highest proficient level of armor you're allowed to wear. For example, as a Bounty Hunter, wearing adaptive armor gear will grant you heavy armor stats. Likewise, for a Jedi Consular, wearing adaptive armor gear will grant you light armor stats.
Prior to patch 1.3, almost all social items were light armor. While all classes could wear light armor, users complained that the only classes that could wear social gear and use it in PvE and PvP environments without losing out on armor rating were Jedi Consulars and Sith Inquisitors, so Adaptive Armor was introduced so everyone could do the same.
With that said, all social items, such as the ones sold by Social Item Vendors on various planets, the Collector's Edition Vendor, and even from drops such as Karagga's Unyielding Helm are now adaptive armor.
As of 1/2/2013, all gear sold on the Cartel Market are all adaptive armor.
